MIRROR MMMMIRROR is an AI mirror that talks back to you, eventually. I begin by performing in front of the mirror over several months, teaching the AI to mimic, anticipate, remember, and respond before it is released into different contexts and communities. Each mirror begins with the same authored history but changes through encounters with the people who perform in front of it, accumulating echoes of their speech, movement, and behavior while deciding when to reflect, predict, speak, or remain blank. An English-speaking performer, for example, might encounter a mirror that suddenly talks back in Spanish, with the stutter it learned from me. At the same moment, their reflection might stop mimicking them and begin fidgeting with a movement learned from a teenager weeks earlier. MIRROR MMMMIRROR transforms self-portraiture into a collective portrait that develops differently wherever it lives, asking what happens when a reflection becomes crowded with the traces of everyone who has stood before it. The work takes different scales and shapes in different contexts, from full-length and vanity mirrors to smartphones and computer screens.
