“SAFE”

The Wrong Biennale No 3
Nov 1 2017 - Jan 31 2018
An intergenerational group of artists, writers, musicians, and performers. Together their work questions the validity of safety through online expressions of intersectional trauma — personal, familial, collective, and systemic. The exhibition website intentionally does not host or show any art, photos, or video as a safe space strategy to ease people into the content that lives elsewhere on the Internet. I rewatched Todd Haynes’ movie [SAFE] last night. Friends suggested it months ago when they heard I was putting this show together but I waited until now and I’m glad I did because I can’t get it out of my head. Several words hit me halfway through the movie in a scene where the main character Carol and her husband sit in a small school auditorium. A spokeswoman stands dead center on stage with a podium, chalkboard, and painted backdrop of a pastoral landscape behind her. The camera zooms in slowly. “The first thing you need to do in order to clear is create an oasis in which to live. Your oasis is your safe place.”
